Modeling 101
The modeling industry is a very unique industry and I love working in it. What I love most is that there are so many different things to do in this industry which gives models more opportunity. If you don't work in this industry it can be really confusing so I thought today's blog could explain what this industry is about. Here are a few terms that are used a lot, followed by a definition.
Model - A person who poses for artists and phptpgraphers and is employed to wear clothing or pose with a product for purposes of display and advertising.
Portfolio/Book - A folder that contains pictures of models with different looks. Models will bring this when going to see a client to show their versatility. The more looks a model can pull of the more work she will get. Now models also have online ports which are easier and cheaper to update.
Runway/Catwalk - This is what high fashion models walk on during a fashion show. Runway models are known to be 5'8'' or taller.
Trade show/ Trade show model - An exhibition organized so that companies in a specific industry can showcase and demonstrate their latest products, service, study activities of rivals and examine recent trends and opportunities. A trade show model is hired from a modeling agency to provide general assistance at the booth and attract attendees.
Promotional model/Brand ambassador - A promotional model is a person hired to drive consumer demand for a product, service, brand, or concept by directly interacting with potential consumers. A promotional model can be female or male, and is intended to be attractive in physical appearance. They serve to provide information about the product or service and make it appealing to consumers. While the length of interaction may be short, the promotional model delivers a live experience that reflects on the product or service he or she is representing.
Modeling agency - An office that clients will contact to hire models for their campaign, fashion show, trade show, event, corporate party etc. Models are sometimes managed by modeling agencies or they can be hired as an independent contractor.
TFP/TFCD - Trade for print/pictures or trade for cd. This is used a lot between photographers and models. They are both giving their time in exchange for images. There is no money involved.
MUA - Make up artist.
Recap form - This is usually a 1 page document that models will submit to their agency after working a promotion. Most commonly used for liquor promotions. The client wants to know how many samples were passed out, what the consumers reaction was, and other details about the event.
Model Mayhem - Also known as MM. This is a free website for models, photographers, muas's and designers to network on.
I hope this mini dictionary of the modeling industry makes things a little less confusing.

Avoid This Situation
One of our models called the other day and asked for some advice. She worked with another modeling agency a few months ago and still hasn't received payment. This is the worst situation for a model because in this industry some companies pay between 30 days and 10 weeks which is an extremely long time already, so when they are late on payment it can be even longer. It's not fair because you showed up to work, did a great job and expected to get paid on time. She asked me what she could do to get paid and I gave her a few tips so she can avoid this from happening again.
I hate to write about negative things that happen in this industry but they do happen very often. Just be cautious when working with new companies and do your research. The best way to find great companies to work with is to ask other people at events who they work for.
Team Pink Avenue
www.pinkavenuemodels.com
- Always research the company that you are going to work for. You can google them, ask friends that work in the same industry and even check rip off report. If you read anything bad, I would avoid working with the company.
- Always get a contact number from the client you are representing. If the agency isn't paying you at least you can call the client and tell them. They should know what happened to their money and learn to never work with that agency again.
- Make sure you read over the contract especially the payment part. As soon as your check is late start calling and emailing the company. You have the right to ask about your check, it's your money. Be prepared to hear multiple excuses.
- If calling and emailing isn't getting you any answers it's time to take legal action. There are companies out there that won't pay. The client has paid them but they have spent the money else where. Get phone numbers or emails from others that worked the promotion as well so you guys can team up together if needed.

What Do We Expect From Our Clients??
Pink Avenue Models always blogs about what we expect from our models and how our models should act at an event. A promotion has a lot of people involved and everyone has to do their part to make the promotion a success, this includes the modeling agency, the models, and the client. We expect our models to show up dressed to impress, ready to work and have fun, and to act professional. We also have client expectations, they are all pretty simple and necessary to have the promotion run perfectly. Here is a list of what we expect from our clients:
Everyone at Pink Avenue Models loves working in the modeling industy. We have had great clients in the past and are looking forward to future clients. A successful event happens when we all work together. Looking forward to our 2010 events!
Team Pink Avenue
www.pinkavenuemodels.com
- We expect our clients to provide all the necessary details. This includes dates, times, location, brand, model responsibilities, attire, budget and anything else we need to know. The more information we have the easier it is for us to staff your event.
- We expect our clients to select the models they would like to work with in a timely matter. Model's availability can change any minute which means if you wait a week the model you want may have booked something else.
- We expect our clients to sign an agreement as soon as they make their selections. This agreement is between the client and our modeling agency and is required before we can move forward.
- We want to build good relationships with all of our clients. In order for this to happen we have to have good communication and trust. We understand that things change and we accept that, just let us know. The models work directly for us and we need to know exactly what is happening.
- We expect our clients to pay on time. You have come to us and asked us to provide a service, we have and you need to pay for it. There is a due date on every invoice and we expect payment on that date.

No Height Requirements In This Industry
I was working an event the other night and a consumer came up to me and said I think you are too small to work in the modeling industry. I was 5'8'' with heels on. He told me he worked as a model in the past and that he is used to seeing tall, skinny girls. I then went on to explain that models come in all sizes, heights, weights, ethnicitys and that there are different types of modeling. Let's just say I definitely won this argument.
I think when people hear the word model they think tall, super skinny, walking on the runway like the Victoria's Secret Angels. Yes we would all love to be in their position but some of us just are not built that way. Luckily there are other types of modeling such as promotional modeling, print modeling (yes there are short girls in ads), parts modeling and so many others.
So how tall are some of the supermodels we look up to?
Naomi Campbell - 5'9.5''
Heidi Klum - 5'8.5''
Tyra Banks - 5'10''
Cindy Crawford - 5'9.5''
Elle Macpherson - 6'0''
Kate Moss - 5'6''
Marissa Miller - 5'8''
Gisele Bundchen - 5'10.5''
Laetitia Casta - 5'7''
Claudia Schiffer - 5'11''
This proves my point. Even supermodels range in height. I listed 10 models and the height range is between 5'6'' and 6'0''. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't do what you want to do. If you want to model try it, every client is looking for something different. Good luck!

Go From Day Look To Evening Look Instantly
I think every promotional model, actually all women in general have been in the following situation. You worked all day and now you have made last minute plans to meet friends or coworkers in the evening. You are thinking oh no, I have been working all day I am not dressed and ready to go out. Well I have found a few easy steps to take your day time look and instantly change it to an evening look. Follow these few steps and you will look great at any event.
To summarize this blog in one sentence I would say all women should carry a small make up bag containing bronzer, eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss. Its better to be prepared than unprepared. Try to go out and gossip with your girlfriends often, it's good for you.
Team Pink Avenue
www.pinkavenuemodels.com
- Always carry a bronzer in your purse, make sure it shimmers just enough. Add this to your cheeks, shoulders, and even legs for instant shine.
- Fix your flat boring hair and sex it up. This can be done fast and takes little effort. Run wet hands through your hair and twist it into a loose bun. When you are ready to hit the town take it down, shake it and spray for a messy and flirty look.
- Have the necessary items to create a smokey eye, black eyeliner is a must!
- Have your favorite lip gloss ready. Some suggest using a red color for the glam look but wear whatever you feel best in.
- Carry mascara with you. This item is so necessary, if you are going to carry anything in your purse it should be this and lip gloss.

Winter Beauty Tips
Winter is here and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Are you having winter skin issues, we all are. Here are a few tips to fix the dry winter skin you have had the past couple of weeks.
1. Take shorter showers. Hot water removes the skin's natural oils leaving it dry.
2. Use a mild soap that has moisturizing agents in the soap. Sccented soap, deoderant soaps or antibacterial soaps can dry out your skin.
3. Moisturize. Do this everyday, twice a day on dryer aras.
4. When shaving make sure you use shaving cream or a body wash and change your blades often. Shaving can irritate already dry skin so be careful.
5. Wear sunscreen every day of the year.
6. Wear chapstick with sunscreen in it and apply often.
Models should use these easy tips to keep their skin gorgeous even in the rough winter months.

Save Time And Money While Looking Amazing
All women want to feel beautiful but it's not always easy. Beauty can be painful, expensive and time consuming. I found an article on self.com that lists 8 things women can do to get ready faster and save money. Here is a list of 8 things that models should change this year, it will make getting ready easier and save you money.
* When getting a manicure ask them to file or cut your nails short. Your manicure will last much longer.
* Stop dying your hair. If you insist on dying your hair try to keep it close to your natural hair color so it can grow out and not be as noticeable.
* Leave your hair its normal texture. Do you really want to blow dry, straighten or curl your hair everyday? Of course not so don't! This will allow you to get extra hours of sleep too.
* Stick to skin products that work. Buying new things and trying every product on the market will cause problems and you will waste money.
* Stop tweezing your eyebrows. Some models do this too much! Full eyebrows are good and allow you to wear less make up...which means it will take less time to get ready.
* Do all your running around make up free. If you insist on going to the grocery store with make up on skip the foundation and eyeliner and just use mascara, lip gloss and a little blush. There is no reason to be done up while running errands.
* Skip waxing. It's dangerous and expensive. There are a lot of products that you can buy now that are cheaper and you can do it your self.
* Love your body. If you don't you will spend a lot of time thinking of how you need to change everything about your body and spend a lot of money trying to do it. There is no such thing as a perfect body and you should never compare yourself to a body that you see on a magazine cover, they are airbrushed! Models have flaws too.
People that work in the modeling industry are expected to be dressed to impress at every event. Follow these few tips to look just as good while spending less time and money.

Promotional Models: Rules of 2010
This is our first blog of 2010! We have a new year ahead of us and the staff at Pink Avenue Models is really excited for the new year and new events. We do have a lot of exciting promotions planned for 2010 and we just want to make sure our models are ready. Here are 10 rules to live by in 2010 when working promotions, hopefully you already obey them, if not it's time to make changes!
1. Show up on time! On time means 15 minutes early. Make sure you leave with enough time to travel and park.
2. Have all the items you will need for any promotion. Black pants, black skirt, black heels, khaki pants, gym shoes, long sleeved white shirt and professional attire for trade shows.
3. Make sure you fill out all of the necessary paperwork that your agency requires. Do it as soon as you get it. If the agency has to ask multiple time it will make you look unprofessional and it will be hard for them to book you again.
4. Don't cancel last minute. There is no excuse. You canceling last minute hurts the modeling agency that booked you, hurts the client that you were scheduled to work for and hurts your reputation. Modeling agencies understand that things come up but when they hear excuses such as... I'm sick, I had a family emergency, I had to go out of town all of a sudden or anything else right before a promotion it's hard to believe.
5. Have your pictures and resumes updated. Please don't send in pictures from 2006, that is 4 years ago and we can't send that to clients. Try do get new pictures at least twice a year and update your resume after each event. Clients and agencies like to know about your experience.
6. If you have any problems with the promotion that you are working do not ever complain to the client. Always call the modeling agency that booked you and talk to them about it. Yes, you are working for the client but the modeling agency hired you. All problems should be directed to the person that hired you.
7. Remember the basic rules of every promotion. Know your product, never make up an answer to a question that you don't know about the product, don't swear or talk unprofessionally to anyone, don't text, email or talk on your phone while working. Promotional models make a lot of money and get to work in a fun atmosphere, don't take advantage of it.
8. Dress to impress. Show up hair and make up ready. You are called a promotional model for a reason. Please don't show up to promotions with unbrushed hair, unshowered, with wrinkly clothes on or anything else. Think model when you are getting ready.
9. Respond to the agency or client if they contact you. Clients may contact you to go over important things about the promotion and the agency may contact you to get more information or go over things. Please get back to the agency as soon as you can. You can email or call, which ever is easiest for you.
10. Always have fun! Personality is a requirement for promotional models. Leave all your problems at the door when working a promotion. Have fun, smile, meet people, and make money. If you are in a bad mood it will come off to consumers, the client and co workers.
Lets have a great 2010!
