I have been to Las Vegas 5 times this year and I still don't understand why people love the city so much. I try to get in and out as fast as I can, its just not my type of city. However, this city has more trade shows than any other city in the country. There is a lot of money in Las Vegas and a great place for promotional models to live and work. I read today that Chicago is colder than Mars at the moment. I woke up wondering why I choose to live in a city that is colder than Mars, then I realized I love this city and the weather is temporary. The Chicago Cubs Have Won The WORLD SERIES!

I can't put into words what last night was like. I wanted to be as close to the stadium as I could be because I wanted to be there for all of the madness. Madness is exactly what it was but in the best way. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Chicago, every single neighborhood was full of people. The people were so happy, everyone was smiling, laughing, cheering and singing Go Cubs Go. Everyone was friends last night and was greeted with a high five or hug. I have never seen so much Cubs gear in my life! Last night was magical and a reminder of why this city is so amazing. I can't stop watching the recaps, the videos of fans, and looking at pictures. Yesterday was magical and a night that I will never forget. I can't wait to tell my kids and grandkids where I was when the Cubs finally won a World Series and how it felt. Most Haunted Cities In America

The world is not a fun place right now. I am over hearing about the election, I still cant believe these are our two options. I hate logging on to social media and seeing the Kardashians every single day. I am getting to the point where I want to delete my social media all together. The best thing about leaving the country is that I can turn off my phone, stay away from work emails, ignore social media and enjoy my surroundings. NACS - Atlanta!

NACS is one of the best trade shows any promotional model can work. The hours are great, the energy is amazing and the attendees are relaxed. Is Your "Sexy" Picture Unprofessional?

It is so hard to pay attention to the media right now. There are numerous rape cases that are not being taken seriously, and this morning I read that a judge said, "why couldn't you just keep your knees together?" This blog doesn't have anything to do with trade shows or events but it does apply to promotional models that deal with sexual harassment daily. A friend posted an article on FB last night and I don't think the article is well written but I do see the point. There was a time many years ago that I posed for Maxim, Stuff, FHM and any other mens magazine out there. I didn't think that it would come back to haunt me. When I graduated I struggled to find a job and I didn't understand why. I didn't even get interviews. I believe the reason is that there are a lot of women in HR in the marketing field and women are easily intimidated and extremely competitive. Why would a woman want to interview a Maxim model? This article is poorly written but I understand the point. Is a woman not supposed to post a bikini picture because it is seen as being sexual? That is crazy! Women deal with so many body issues and try to be someone they are not because this is what they see. Every single magazine has a beautiful model that has been airbrushed and we are expected to look like this. The beauty industry makes billions of dollars a year. Women spend money on make up, tanning salons, nail salons, waxing appointments, hair appointments, wardrobe, and plastic surgery to look like these magazine covers. Women suffer from body issues and this results in low self esteem and less respect for themselves. Why are women expected to look like this? When they do look like this they are expected to cover up? This doesn't make any sense and is clearly a double standard. Nothing gets me heated like a post about how women should act, what they should do, how they should look and the worst comment of all, how they should smile more. Don't Cancel Last Minute

I don't know how many times I have written about no call no shows or backing out last minute but it happened again. I don't think promotional models know how big of an issue this is and how it puts everyone in a bad place. Here is an example of what happened late last night. IMTS is one of the biggest trade shows in the World and definitely one of the biggest conventions that comes to Chicago. One of our clients booked a model months ago and I made sure to follow up with her numerous times to make sure she had the dates set and planned on working. I reached out to her over the weekend with final details and she responds saying she is no longer available. This was 11 hours before IMTS was starting. IMTS is one of the busiest trade shows, pretty much every local model works and many travel in for this event. Most models have been booked for months so imagine how hard it is to find a replacement at 10pm on a Sunday. I reached out to our local staff and posted on the brand ambassador pages on social media and as you can imagine I barely received any response. At this point I am extremely annoyed, the client is furious and the situation isn't getting any better. As I am spending hours working on this the model isn't thinking about the situation at all. The worst thing that happens to her is that I delete her from the database and she never works with us again. We did find a replacement after hours of back and forth emails with models and the client. Promotional models don't understand that this costs the agency thousands of dollars, ruins our reputation and makes our clients go elsewhere. Promotional modeling is a profession and can be a career. This can only happen with reliable, professional, outgoing and intelligent models that care about their reputation and appreciate the opportunity given to them. Why You Can't Wear White After Labor Day

I never understood why we aren't supposed to wear white after Labor Day. Labor day was yesterday so I thought I should find out the meaning behind this rule. Is the Promotional Modeling Industry Changing?

What is happening in this industry, things are definitely changing and I don't think for the better. Social media is huge right now and has been for the past couple of years. The team at Pink Avenue Models is very active on social media, we see what people are posting. When I started in this industry many years ago it was amazing. It was competitive and you were competing against the best. All of the promotional models/trade show models were gorgeous, educated, talented and people that you wanted to work with. They were reliable and professional and treated their job as a career. Now the staff that I see is in it for the money. They roll out of bed, don't put any time into their appearance and usually show up late. They don't take the time to learn about what they are presenting and don't mind looking dumb in from of the client and consumers. They complain and look miserable. The pay rate has decreased. I made great money years ago and when I see what companies offer now it's insulting and probably why the talent pool is declining. A trade show model should never be offered $17 per hour. Standing for 8 hours a day, usually in heels is exhausting. Smiling and engaging with every person that walks by isn't easy. Getting ready in the morning, getting to the convention center, working your whole shift and driving home during rush hour turns into an 11 hour day and trade shows are multiple days in a row. This is a tough job and if clients want good staff the rate has to be increased. Client requests have become more demanding. I deal with clients everyday and sometimes what they request is crazy for the amount of pay that they are offering. I will always fight for the promotional models to be treated well because I understand their position, I was in their position for many years. Sometimes clients have high demands but a tight budget and it just doesn't work out. I don't know when things started changing but I have had many conversations about this over the years. My friends in the industry tell me how hard it is to find reliable staff and I have to agree with them based on the experiences that I have working at an agency. Things have definitely changed and I don't know what the future will bring. Perfect Beach Waves

Summer has officially arrived and it is hot. In Chicago we spend about 9 months wishing it was Summer but when it actually arrives I start looking forward to Fall. Summer is great for our industry when it comes to work, it is definitely busy for promotional models. There is some type of event every weekend on top of promotions and trade shows. It is a great time to make money but a hard time to look your best. I have a ton of hair and struggle with it in the Summer, I usually just end up throwing it in a messy bun. Las Vegas is a busy city. There are always tons of trade shows, big events, concerts, and other things going on. Promotional models is this city are always busy. It is 80 degrees in Chicago right now and is expected to stay that way throughout the week. It is also Memorial day weekend which means Summer has arrived! Has The Promotional Modeling Industry Died?

I have worked in this industry since I was 18 and my how has it changed. I remember when I first started working events all of the other promotional models I worked with were gorgeous, smart, reliable, responsible, outgoing and professional. They were friendly and we were part of a small circle and so lucky to work in this industry. We helped each other out and recommended other staffing agencies and promotions to each other because we trusted each other and cared. I don't see this in the industry anymore. The NRA is a trade show that comes to Chicago and is one of my favorites. I think it is the best convention to work, the consumers are relaxed, there is music, food and drinks and close to 70,000 people. All I noticed this year was girls that looked like they rolled out of bed, promotional models coming late to their booths, constantly on their phones and just not thrilled to be there. There were so many last minute cancellations, promotional models not showing up or canceling half way through the event. If you cant have fun at the NRA you should not be working trade shows. I know we all need to work and love to make the money we do in this industry but seeing all of this makes me miss how things used to be. Models were excited to work and happy to work in this industry because it didn't feel like a job. It's heartbreaking to see an industry that I love so much not do well. Clients aren't paying as much, they are cutting hours yet demanding more than ever. I don't know if things will go back to the way they were. Is the promotional modeling world dying? Will this be a position that doesn't even exist in 5 - 10 years? Team Pink Avenue

Well, it is finally warm in Chicago, 75 degrees! I am working outside and realized that I haven't seen the sun in months and am the color of a ghost. Why Have Promotional Models Changed the Past 10 Years?

I started working in this industry when I turned 18. I started as a promotional model for Miller Lite and other liquor brands. From on premise samplings I headed into special events, trade shows, and other promotions. When I started I worked with smart girls, most had marketing backgrounds. They were pretty and always showed up with their hair and make up done. They were professional, educated on the brands, and very outgoing. This was 14 years ago and my have things changed. I'm still involved in the industry but in different ways. Promotional models are not the same as they were when I was working events. The staff doesn't care about the brands or the client/agency, they just care about the paycheck. Models are late and show up like they rolled out of bed. They are not as outgoing and most have bad attitudes. When did things change and why? Promotional modeling is supposed to be fun! Models get to work at some of the biggest events in the country and get paid for it. They get paid well to! When you are hired you are expected to show up on time, study up on the brand, be energetic and engaging, put effort into your appearance and respect the client, staffing agency and attendees. ITW 2016 - Chicago

Promotional Model Problems - Missing Payment

I'm not sure if every staffing agency pays attention to the casting pages on social media but the team at Pink Avenue Models does. I don't go out of my way everyday to spy on other agencies but I am aware of who is casting for what event. I also notice all of the complaints from promotional models, the biggest one is late payment or not being paid at all. I know we have mentioned this before but you have to be careful who you work for! I know that you probably see cool jobs or maybe you just need money and are so eager to work any event. There are so many companies out there right now. It seems like every ex promotional model is starting there own. As a business owner for over 7 years I can tell you that it is not easy running a staffing agency, the work never ends. As a former promotional model that has seen it all I always put our staff first. I worked for companies that didn't pay, companies that paid month and months later, and dealt with rude staffing teams. They didn't understand that I needed the money and that I earned it.We make sure that you guys are paid within 30 days because you deserve it. You worked for us, you have bills, and you should be paid in a timely manner. Personally I think that the agencies that pay 90+ days after an event are wrong. That is 3 months after you worked and unacceptable, they get paid every 2 weeks and you should get paid in a decent time frame. Some agencies do not pay at all and then avoid your calls and emails when you try to reach out. The sad thing is that these agencies are still in business. There is a long list of agencies that I don't want any of you to work for but I am not allowed to mention them. There are a couple of things that you can do to avoid payment issues. Work with companies that you trust and have experience with. If you are new to the industry ask other promotional models for recommendations. Don't leave the event without the clients contact information. If you are having issues with the agency get the client involved, that should get your problem solved. Read the social media forums, there are tons of complaints from models on there. Trust the people that are in the same industry as you! If you do have a bad experience please share it but also share your good experiences. If the booking agent is using a personal email address that is usually a red flag as well. All businesses should have a work email. Keep track of when you worked, who you worked for, and when payment is due according to your contract. Please just use common sense when booking work. Summer is right around the corner and it is going to be extremely busy, be careful where you spend your time. Lets have a great busy season! Team Pink Avenue

Heat Free Beach Waves for All Promotional Models

Summer is coming soon, hopefully. As a girl that has long hair and a lot of it, I can say there are many days that I do not want to do anything with it. Curling irons are time consuming, I hate how my hair looks straight but if I let it air dry it is a mess. Promotional models live hectic lives and have crazy schedules, worrying about their hair is the last thing they need. IMTS 2016 - Chicago!

I worked IMTS a time or two and it is a huge show. I remember walking in to McCormick Place and being amazed by the huge machinery and how big every booth was. All of my promotional model friends were working and it felt like a reunion when we were walking down the isles. Well, it's almost time for IMTS to make its way back to Chicago and we are already hearing from clients. This is a trade show that is booked months ahead of time. This convention started out as being 10 days long but is now 6 days long. IMTS will be taking over McCormick Place September 12th - 17th. This is the largest manufacturing show with over 2,000 exhibitors and almost 115,000 attendees. New York Trade Shows - April 2016

I love New York for so many reasons. Sometimes I think about moving there and then I realize how much I love Chicago so I stay here. Every single one of my New York trips have been amazing. There is so much to see, tons of great bars and restaurants and just a different way of life that is fun to observe. I can say that I don't love the aggressive feel of the city and how fast paced it is but a lot of people do. Honestly, I don't know if I would survive a week living there! America's Beauty Show will be taking place at McCormick Place next weekend. This is one of my favorite trade shows in Chicago because it has any beauty product a girl could dream of. You walk up and down the isles and see demonstrations from celebrity stylists and learn new techniques.
