Overworked Promotional Models? Only In The US!

In the promotional modeling industry it is common to be overworked, and the thing is we do it to ourselves. Promotional models book themselves for a 10 day auto show, or work a trade show for 8 hours and then a liquor promotion or 2 at night, sometimes these models work 3 weeks in a row without a day off. It's not a bad thing, good work ethic is a great thing but this can be exhausting. We all need days off so we can do personal things, grocery shopping, laundry, lunch with friends, and we all need a quiet or crazy vacation sometimes. Try and have a day off every week just so you don't get burned out, we need you at your best when you're working your events and promotions. Negative Thoughts Out. Positive Thoughts in. :)

I saw this on Facebook today and thought it was awesome. While I was in college I had no idea what I wanted to do, I just knew that marketing was interesting and a good field to go into. One night I was bartending and a Miller Lite rep came up to me and asked if I wanted to do promotions, 10 years later I am in the same field. I started doing liquor promotions, that turned into golf outings, trade shows, auto shows, special events and being requested by modeling agencies all over the country. I moved to Chicago after college and continued to do promotions. One day I was asked to come into a modeling/talent agency on Michigan Avenue for an interview that turned into me getting an internship and then becoming the Director shortly after. I've always enjoyed everything about this industry, I love that every day is different and that I work in an industry that entertains and educates people. I think this is why work never seemed like work. While working at the agency I tried so hard to be the best and do perfect work. I learned so much at the agency and in the field of what I liked, what worked and what didn't work. Things went bad with that company so a friend and I started our own company. I had the experience in the field, he had experience in finance and owning a business. It seemed like the perfect combination and a winning team. Five years later here we are still going. With that said it hasn't been easy. We have had amazing clients, perfect events, great staff and I couldn't be more excited every day about what else will happen. We have also had bad days, there is a lot of competition in this industry and we have to keep growing and competing. "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." I get asked all the time what I'm going to do next, or why I picked this career, and a lot of other negative questions because some people don't get what our industry is. They think we are uneducated promotional models that flirt in small outfits for money. This article reminded me to not care what others think, says not to explain yourself, don't force things and just be happy. I know that I needed a reminder like this and I think a lot of our team needs the same. You will also need a few items in your closet, you may already have some. Here is a list of items every promotional model should own and since today is Black Friday it's a great time to shop for cheap! * Black pants. Make sure they are fitted and professional looking. Do not buy black jeans! * Black skirt. Not too short, not to long. The best length is mid thigh. * Black heels. Make sure they are closed toe. This is required for a lot of in store demos. * Black knee high boots. These are usually required when working liquor promotions. * Gym shoes. These are nice to have and usually worn during street team promotions. * Khaki pants/shorts. Khakis are required usually in the summer for outdoor promotions but can be asked for year round. * Umbrella. There are promotions that are rain or shine so make sure you have an umbrella. * Nude bra/underwear. There are some uniforms that are very sheer and that is when these items will be required. * Conservative/professional clothing. Most trade shows will request the trade show models to dress professional but sexy. Have a few items in your closet in case the client requests this look. Update Your Pictures & Resumes For 2013!

December and January are usually the slowest months out of the year in this industry. Trade shows slow down, street team promotions only exist in warm places, there are special holiday events and non stop liquor promotions but it's a slow time for most of us. We want you to use this time to catch up on rest, traveling, booking events for 2013, but most of all for updating your pictures and resume. We submit pictures to every client and we like to use recent ones, clients don't want to know what you looked like 3 years ago. Please enjoy your time off but if you take the time to have a few photo shoots please send us your new pictures so we can update your profile. We are looking forward to a busy 2013!

Chicago Trade Shows - December

Halloween came and went and we are in the middle of Fall already. As always the team at Pink Avenue Models is looking ahead to the month ahead. November starts this week so we are looking into December. December is definitely one of the slower months for trade shows, but it's so busy for special events and liquor promotions. Busy Schedule? Don't Stress

The promotional modeling world can be awesome! We get to work fun trade shows, special events, get into every bar in the city for a liquor promotion, meet famous people, get VIP access and not to mention we represent amazing brands and get tons of free stuff. Everything has a downside and being overbooked and stressed are some of the downfalls to this industry. We think about work and how fun it will be and then we book ourselves all weekend, all week, sometimes multiple times a day. If that doesn't stress you out add paperwork, recaps, uploading pictures, being in traffic, making sure you have the right attire, and remembering to stop and eat on top of a busy schedule. STRESS! I found an article that includes ways to relieve stress, everyone has their own methods but here are some recommendations. Remember to just breath!

1. Have alone time. You need a break from people and need to do what makes you happy.
2. Write your schedule down and keep it with you. Then you will never forget or mix things up.
3. Try yoga. There are so many different types out there, do what works best for you.
4. Have a night out. Just don't talk or think about work, and make sure you don't stay out to late and miss your morning event.
5. Laugh. Watch a funny movie or call your entertaining friend.
6. Go for a long walk. Observe everything around you.
7. Listen to music, this is the easiest thing for anyone to do.
8. Have a relaxation day, get a massage, mani & pedi, haircut. You deserve to be spoiled!
9. Plan a mini vacation, this will keep you sane and give you a break from your busy schedule.
10. Take a nap, if possible. Otherwise make sure you get plenty of sleep at night.

Promotional Models, Do You Own These Items?

With busy season approaching fast the team at Pink Avenue Models wants to make sure you are ready! The attire for promotions is pretty standard, trade shows are usually business professional, liquor promotions require black dresses or black skirts with a branded top, and street teams usually ask for khaki pants/shorts. Promotional models should always have a classic pair of closed toe black patent leather heels, a pair of white gym shoes, and a pair of comfortable flat shoes. Once and a while the attire will change and most of the time the attire is provided. Just make sure you have this list of items in your closet so when you get booked for the event you are all set!

Beauty Mistakes To Avoid!

I just read an article from Allure that I found pretty fitting for this industry. Most of our clients want to hire female promotional models to work their trade shows, street teams, liquor promotions or special events. The girls are hired to promote, demonstrate and educate consumers on a specific brand and a lot of times the target demographic is mostly male. This article lists all of the beauty mistakes that guys think women make. When going to your next event keep these things in mind and try to avoid them since they are looked at in a negative way from the male audience.

Here are the complaints from a survey of guys:

1. Too much perfume. No more then 3 sprays.


2. Foundation. Guys hate that this rubs off on your clothes, his clothes, and that it looks obvious. If you have to use it use a lightweight version.


3. Overdone eyelashes. Too much mascara or obvious fake lashes are a turn off.


4. Dry skin. There is a lot of hand shaking, and posing with your arms around people in this industry. Keep your skin soft.


5. Not so white teeth. There is so much smiling in this industry, make sure you take care of your pretty smile.


6. Orange skin. If you're going to fake a tan keep it natural.


7. Too much product in your hair. There is nothing worse then stiff, untouchable hair.


8. Dark eyeshadow. The smoky eye can be sexy if done right, too much looks scary and high maintenance.


9. Bright lipstick. Keep it natural.


10. Hair accessories. Guys do not like extensions, feathers, or anything else in your hair.

Never Do These Things With Your Make Up

I have worked in this industry for a long time and have seen quite a bit. I have seen models at trade shows, brand ambassadors working street teams, models at special events, working liquor promotions and even on the runway. Most are obviously gorgeous but we have all made fashion mistakes and even had make up mess ups. Here are 5 things you should never do when doing your make up...

1. Don't wear the wrong color foundation. This is so obvious, and always looks awful. DON"T do it!


2. Using a concealer that is lighter then your foundation. This actually makes your blemishes more obvious instead of hiding them.


3. Make sure you check your lipgloss in the right light. If you will be in bright lights at a convention center tone it down, if it's an event at a bar brighten it up.


4. Wearing just 1 color of eyeshadow for your whole eye. Blend! Lighter colors towards the top, darkest in the crease.


5. Too much make up in general. Keep it natural, everyone appreciates a naturally beautiful girl.

There is a time and place to wear fun colors and extreme make up and lashes but most of the time clients appreciate the natural look. Have fun working your upcoming events and keep these tips in mind.

I love doing research and helping models or potential models with tips in this industry. Today I found an article with amazing tips from beauty experts. Keep in mind that your make up depends on the type of event you are working. Street teams and trade shows usually request a more natural look, while liquor promotions and special events like a more done up, glamorous look. Here are some tips, use them!

1. Layer your eyeliner. They recommend using a pencil and then going over it with a liquid liner. It will last all day!


2. Hair mask. If you sleep with a hair mask and wash it out in the morning your hair will be repaired and super soft.


3. 2 eyeliner colors. They recommend black on top, brown on bottom. Its more natural.


4. Heat your eyelash curler. This will make your lashes stay curly all day. Use your blow dryer for the best effect.


5. Stay hydrated. The best thing for your body and skin is water.


6. Make your blow out last. Just sleep with your hair pinned up in a high bun, you will wake up with amazing hair.


7. Always wear sunscreen. It prevents aging and protects you from sun damage and skin cancer.


8. Wear your hair up when you can. Taking breaks from blow dryers, flat irons or curling irons is a great thing!


9. Chapstick. A necessity, always carry it with you.


10. Yellow nails. This happens when we wear dark polish in the sun. Use a nail brush and whitening toothpaste to solve this issue.


11. Concealer. It's a must. Use under your eyes to create a brighter look and cover with powder.


12. Mix bronzer or oil with your body lotion. This can give a hint of color or shine.

It's a fact, women LOVE shoes and most of us have minimum 20 pairs of heels. In the promotional modeling industry heels are a necessity and we spend long hours in them. Models work trade shows, special events, street teams, walk in runway shows and anything in between. Here is a list of 10 types of shoes ever model should have in their closet, these will cover any type of event you are booked for.

1. Classic black pump. Business sexy but can be worn at night as well.


2. Ballet flat. Necessary for between shifts or outdoor promotions.
